You may have heard about Micaela Superstar’s goodwill towards birds in recent episodes. Everyday she sets out bird seed, nuts and suet for the woodland creatures in her neighborhood.  Her home welcomes birds and critters not seen in such abundance since the last muppet movie. Turtle doves, blue birds, cardinals, bunnies, coyotes, hawks, squirrels and even skunks are frequent visitors, but one bird distinguishes themself in this menagerie. The Common Grackle. 

Just because the Grackle is common doesn’t mean they’re basic. This bird stands a towering 11 to 13 inches from beak to tail feather and has a wing span of 14 to 18 inches. The grackle sports black feathers with a black purple, blue, or green iridescent head. And is Micaela’s frequent visitor. Check out the photos of recently spotted feathered friends.

Fun fact: When a grackles gather they’re called a “plague.” Pretty much the best plague there is. They will often call out to each other until there is a plague forming around the food! Sometimes up to 10 of them will be Grackling about. 

Their voice is hilarious and you see why they are called Grackles once you hear them. Loud, obnoxious and goth af, they remind Micaela of herself in her youth. 

This one is called Fredric, he wears a fedora, but leaves it at home during feeding time.

This guy is Marty, he’s a bit much at times, but we love him.

I think she said her name was Rose but she’s kinda haughty so our convo didn’t go far.

Sasha is a little shy, she lets the turtle doves eat first.

The Blunt Letters was created by best friend duo Micaela Superstar and Elle Lectrick in 2010 as a print fan zine. This photo copied zine spawned 11 issues since then covering topics from customer service hell (where Elle and Micaela met) to alien encounters. It also launched a board game of nightmares, a youtube channel, a social media following, a podcast and finally a website!

The BL decided to start their podcast back in the plague year 2020, to bring one hour a week where you can stop worrying and get lost in movie reviews, space updates, fart jokes and get to know scientists and creative folks.
